Dr. SAMYAKTA SHETTI
Purpose: To analyse donor profile and utility of the corneal tissues of eyebank at a tertiary eye center in south india.
Methods: Retrospective analysis of eyebank records from 2012-2016.
Results: A total of 1134 eyes were retrieved from 570 donors. All donations were voluntary. 665 eyes were used for transplant surgeries, the mean age being 59.26 (11-99) years. Most common cause of death was cardiorespiratory failure(36%). The mean death to enucleation interval was 4.03 (1-14) hours. Mean enucleation to surgery time was 26 (6-46) hours. The utilisation percentage was 58.6. Septicaemia in donor (32%) and poor quality of tissue were the most common causes of nonutilisation of the tissue.
Conclusion: With the advent of increased awareness and increased trained personnel for retrieval of eyeballs, more number of tissues are being retrieved with better quality.
