AIMS: To estimate the prevalence of Diabetic Retinopathy among the type 2 diabetes mellitus patients.
SETTINGS AND DESIGN: 1000 patients were evaluated in a hospital based cross-sectional study conducted.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Ophthalmology. 1000 Type 2 diabetic patients fulfilling the inclusion criteria underwent detailed examination for diabetic retinopathy.
RESULTS: The Overall prevalence of Diabetic Retinopathy(DR) in type 2 diabetic patients was 17.40%. 512 (51.2%) were males and 488 (48.8%) were females. Prevalences of non-proliferative DR and proliferative DR were 91.94% and 8.04% respectively. Presence of DR was associated with longer duration of Diabetes mellitus.
CONCLUSION: Diabetic Retinopathy is a serious blinding condition and its prevelance is rising in every corner of the world.
