Aim:To evaluate and compare outcomes after Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty(DMEK) and Descemet Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty(DSEK).Design:Single-centre,retrospective study.Methods:40 eyes of 40 patients undergoing DMEK,who completed a 6-month follow-up,were compared with 38 eyes of 38 patients undergoing DSEK for Fuch’s endothelial dystrophy/PBK/Bullous Keratopathy/post-PKP rejection/corneal decompensation.Main outcome measures were Best-Corrected Visual Acuity(BCVA) and Endothelial Cell Density(ECD).Results:BCVA increased from 1.3±0.48 logMAR &1.35±0.33 logMAR before surgery to 0.27±0.40 logMAR & 0.47±0.39 logMAR 6 months after DMEK and DSEK(p<0.05),respectively.ECD decreased from 2190±292 cells/mm2 & 2332±175 cells/mm2 before surgery to 1853±294 cells/mm2 & 1834±167 cells/mm2 6 months after DMEK and DSEK(p=0.74),respectively.Conclusion:DMEK provided faster and complete visual rehabilitation. No significant differences were observed in the ECD within a 6-month follow-up.
