With increase in life expectancy Age Related Macular Degeneration will become a public health concern in near future in our country. Through this study we aimed to evaluate ocular association of AMD.
This case control study included participants aged > 50 yrs, visiting ophthalmic OPD of a tertiary care center. Relevant history was taken and complete ophthalmological examination including BCVA, refractometry, keratometry, slit lamp biomicroscopy, ocular biometry and coloured fundus photograph was done. AMD was graded using AREDS classification.
58 cases were compared with 57 controls. Hyperopia(p=0.028), reduced contrast sensitivity (p<0.01) and previous cataract surgery (p=0.045) was significantly associated with AMD. Shorter axial length (p=0.63), steeper cornea (p=0.358) and lenticular opacity (p=0.51) was not significantly associated with AMD. AMD is significantly associated with hyperopia, reduced contrast sensitivity and previous cataract surgery.
