A prospective study, in which incidence of systemic illnesses in patients coming for eye checkup were evaluated in a tertiary eye care setup in south India. All patients above age of 40 years were included for a period of 6 months. Detailed history of present and past systemic illnesses was elicited. These patients underwent basic systemic workup and further evaluated accordingly. Association of these systemic conditions in relation with ocular problems was also noted.
Majority of patients with systemic illnesses were already on treatment for their condition. A small fraction of patients were diagnosed in our hospital and referred to physician for further management
Conclusion: Basic systemic evaluation of patients coming to eye care setup is useful to identify patients with systemic diseases who were not previously diagnosed.
