METHODS : A prospective clinical study was done on 50 eyes of 50 patients with preexisting astigmatism( PEA) >2D ,measured with autorefractokeratometer . Steep axis was identified and site of clear corneal incision was planned at steep axis with 2.8 mm keratome . The opposite clear corneal incision (OCCI) given with 2.8 mm keratome for flattening . Follow up was done on 1 post operative day , 1 week and 1 month .Final outcome was recorded at 1 month and compared with pre operative keratometry readings .
RESULTS : The mean astigmatism correction post operatively using keratometric reading was recorded to be 1.75 D cylinder.
CONCLUSION : OCCI is simple ,inexpensive ,safe in decreasing moderate PEA (1-2 D ) in phacoemulsification . It does not require additional skill and instrument . It can be promising technique in order to decrease PEA.
