AIM-To investigate the efficacy of 0.25% Alcaftadine eye drops in seasonal allergic conjunctivitis patients
METHOD-54 patients of 20-45 yrs with vernal conjunctivitis treated with 0.25% alcaftadine as 1 drop OD for 2 weeks. Signs (eyelid edema ,conjuctival congestion, papillary hyperplasia, chemosis) and symptoms (itching and watering) were evaluated at the beginning of treatment and at 1st & 2nd week. Objective signs evaluated by s/l exam and fl staining.Mean ocular itching score was evaluated at 3 & 5 min post instillation of drop.
RESULT-Mean ocular itching score was significantly lower.At 1 week 46 patients(84%) improved symptomatically ,mild papillary reaction and itching still present in 8 patients(16%)out of which 1 patient reported with temporary and mild burning sensation of eye after instillation of drop .At day 15 all signs and symptoms subsided in all patients .
CONCLUSION-Alcaftadine is a safe and effective option for treatment of vernal conjunctivitis.
