Dr.PANKAJ JESWANI
Aim: to describe the demographic and microbiologic profile and visual outcomes in paediatric keratitis
Method: Retrospective case series
Result: 41 eyes with paediatric keratitis presenting in 2015 included.
Mean age 10.25+6.45 years (1 month to 18 years); 32 males(72%) & 9 females(28%).
Most common risk factor-trauma with vegetative matter(43%).
37 eyes(90%) underwent corneal scraping.
Etiologic agent isolated in 25 eyes(61%); fungi (Aspergillus & Fusarium spp) most commonly implicated(52%) followed by bacteria(40%).
18 eyes(44%) managed with medical therapy alone; 13 eyes(32%) needed glue+BCL while 10 eyes(24%) needed TPK, for corneal perforation in 5 eyes & non-resolving ulcer in 5 eyes.
The logMAR VA at presentation was 1.72+1.05, which improved to 0.84+1.03 over a 3-12 month follow-up.
Conclusion : Microbiologic evaluation is a useful tool in managing paediatric keratitis. Most cases respond to medical therapy alone.
