AIM: To study the prevalence, causes & contributing factor of corneal blindness.
METHODS- Hospital based longitudinal study on corneal blindness, included 273 eyes of 213 cases. All cases of corneal pathology, visual acuity < 3/60 and normal posterior segment were included. Corneal examination performed with reference to aetiopathogenesis, predisposing factors and morphological characteristics. Appropriate intervention was done. RESULTS – Prevalence of corneal morbidity was 8.4% and blindness was 0.37%. Odds of having blindness increased by a risk of 1.5-3.0 times, in Males of productive age group; farmers; residents of rural areas and of low socioeconomic status. Timely adequate interventions reduced the risk of progression to blindness. Intervention was successful in reverting blindness in 57.7% eyes. CONCLUSION – Corneal blindness is a significant ophthalmic problem common in the productive age group. Prevention and timely intervention can best help eliminate this burden.
