358 eyes of 179 patients of mild to moderate keratoconjunctivitis sicca (DEWS level 2) were enrolled in trial. Patients randomized for 2 treatment groups (Optive vs. Osmodrops). Eye drops in both groups were applied 6 times a day for 8 weeks.
At 8 weeks, patients of both groups had subjective relief of symptoms of dry eye disease evaluated by Ocular Surface Disease Index score {baseline mean – 38: Osmodrop) group, 37:Optive group}. Baseline TBUT measured over slit-lamp (mean 04 ±1sec) in both groups. Baseline flourescein staining had mean of 02/02/02 in both groups. Patients using Optive and Osmodrops showed improvements in TBUT (mean 08 ± 2 sec in both groups). Flourescein staining significantly reduced (range 0/0/0 to 01/01/01) in both groups. This resulted significantly lowered OSDI scores in both groups at 8 week follow-up (mean 15, range 10 to 25) which are statistically significant in Osmodrop group as baseline mean OSDI score in Osmodrop groups was higher than Optive group.
