Aim: To evaluate plasma homocysteine and serum vitamin B12 levels in patients with retinal vein occlusion (RVO) and its association with these risk factors and two subtypes of RVO: CRVO and BRVO.
Method: Study design-prospective ,period- april 2016 to march 2017.
Exclusion criteria-Patients above 55 yrs,H/o of HTN, DM, hyperlipidimea, arteriosclerosis
Total 350 patients diagnosed as RVO were enrolled in the study. 65 patients met the inclusion criteria. CRVO -42 and BRVO-23. Homocysteine and serum vit B-12 levels were done in all 65 patients.
Results: 35 (83.3 %) CRVO pts had elevated levels of s.homocysteine and a decrease in vit B-12 levels. 8 (34.7 %) BRVO pts had normal homocysteine but altered vit B-12 level.
Conclusion: These results suggest that elevated Homocysteine levels and low vit B12 levels are associated with a risk of RVO, especially for CRVO. So, besides the common etiological factors , hyperhomocysteinemia and Vitamin B-12 levels should also be considered.
