To evaluate the effect of pterygium excision on pterygium induced Astigmatism and improvement in the best corrected visual acuity following surgery.
The study was carried out on 40 eyes with primary pterygium who underwent pterygium excision with conjunctival autograft. Patients were subjected to VA and auto keratometry pre and 1month postoperatively.
Pterygium is graded based on extent of corneal involvement into 4 grades
The results were compared using Paired t-test. P-value <0.05 was statistically significant. RESULTS- The mean preop and post-op astigmatism in grade 1, 2, 3 and 4 are 0.625, 1.234, 2.325, 4.291 and 0.406, 0.671, 1.075, 1.375 respectively. the mean pre-op and post-op BCVA in grade 1, 2, 3 and 4 are 0.833, 0.677, 0.333, 0.194 and 1, 0.937, 0.666, 0.597 respectively, which was statistically significant. Hence pterygium excision reduces astigmatism and improves vision significantly and as the size of pterygium increases, amount of induced astigmatism increases.
