AIM: To evaluate any association between serum Vitamin D(25 hydroxycholecalciferol) levels and Age related Macular Degeneration in tertiary eye care centre in eastern India.METHOD : A prospective cross sectional study of 200 patients diagnosed with Age Related Macular Degeneration above 50 yrs with similar demographic profile presenting to a tertiary eye centre in eastern India was carried out from 1st April 2016 to 1st April 2017 . All patients underwent serum Vitamin D level estimation using Radioimmunoassay along with fundus photography and fundus autoflouresence. The association between AMD and vitamin D levels were estimated using standard statistical methods.RESULT: A low serum level of vitamin D ( 25 +/_ 12.4 ng/ml) was found in significant number of AMD patients with a lower value in patients having advanced disease, desk jobs and postmenopausal females.CONCLUSION: There exists a significant association between vitamin D deficiency and age related Macular degeneration.
