Aim: To Describe Epidemiology of Open Globe Injuries at our hospital over a period of 5 years.
Method: Review of records of 40 Eyes with Open Globe Injuries from Jan 2012-Dec 2016 was done for demographics, time, nature and cause of injury, visual acuity and ocular findings.
Results: The Prevalence of Open Globe Injuries in our hospital was 2%. Majority underwent Primary Repair with 5% having undergone Evisceration. Visual Acuity at time of presentation was >0.74 LogMAR in 10% with 17.5% having No PL. Most common type of injury as per BETTS was Penetration type mostly Zone-I with most common mode being Occupational injury. Increasing number of injuries with a mean of 8 injuries/year was noted.
Conclusion: Our Study shows Males between 20 to 40 years secondary to occupational injury been affected the most. We conclude that there is an urgent need for reinforcement of Worker Safety Protocols. Public Awareness in ocular injuries is a must for early presentation and quick intervention.
