Aim: To study prognostic factors that predict final visual outcome in open globe injury repairs.
Methods: This retrospective study was conducted on 65 eyes of 65 patients in a tertiary eye care centre in South India over a period of 6 months. Patient’s demographic data, nature of injury, time of initial presentation, visual acuity, and clinical findings were noted. After basic investigations, all patients underwent primary repair. Final outcome assessment was done at 3 months.
Results: Average age at presentation was 31.8 years, majoritively males (83%).Work place accidents (35.3%) and stick injuries (32.3%) were more common. Primary repair was done within 72 hours in 89.2% cases. Visual acuity better than 6/60 was noted in 70.7% at 3 month follow up.
Conclusion: Mode and extent of injury, intervention time, preoperative visual acuity, and posterior segment involvement play a pivotal role in determining final outcome in terms of visual acuity and anatomical integrity of the globe.
