Aim: To evaluate the demographic characteristic and presenting features of patients presenting with peripheral ulcerative keratitis (PUK)
Methods: Fifty-six eyes of 50 consecutive patients with PUK were evaluated retropectively . The main outcome measures were demographic profile, aetiology, clinical features and management.
Results: Seventy eight percent patients were males while 22.0% patients were females. Six patients had a bilateral involvement. The average presenting age was 49.1±19.1 years. Most common symptom was pain ( 92.9% eyes) while decreased vision was present in 60.7% eyes . Most common cause of PUK was Mooren’s ulcer in 90.0% patients. Systemic associations found were pulmonary tuberculosis 6.0%, skin tuberculosis 2.0% and rheumatoid arthritis 2.0%. Conjunctival peritomy was required for management of 78.6% eyes.
Conclusion: Mooren’s ulcer was the most common cause of PUK . Surgical intervention in form of conjunctival peritomy was required in most of the cases.
