DOWN’S SYNDROME, an autosomal disorder, associated with an extra chromosome at 21 chromosomal position, also known as TRISOMY 21;is one of the commonest causes associated with birth defects.
Being the commonest chromosomal abnormality leading to cataract, around 75%of the patients have cataracts of various morphology. The opacities are usually symmetrical and often develop in late childhood.
Our pt.was a 3 months female child diagnosed with Down’s syndrome. On ocular examination under mydriasis she was found to have dense B/L congenital cataract.A decision of immediate intervention was made & all the required investigations were done.
The baby underwent successful lensectomy in BE 3 weeks apart. Both the surgeries were uneventful.Retinoscopy was done and spectacles were prescribed.
This case highlights the importance of early surgical intervention in cases of congenital cataracts, thus breaking the myth in the society & even amongst the ophthalmologists to wait until the child grows.
