Dr.PRABRISHA BANERJEE
Purpose:To study clinical profile of patients with retinitis following viral fever. Method:Retrospective analysis of 17 patients(29 eyes) with a history of viral fever receiving the diagnosis of retinitis at a tertiary eye-care center in India between June2004 & May2014. Result:The mean age was 35.5±16.1years. Bilateral:unilateral=12:5 and male:female=16:1. Most common cause of fever was nonspecific viral illness(10) followed by dengue(3),chikungunya(2) &chickenpox(2). Mean latent period between fever & onset of ocular symptom was21.4±19.5days. Posterior pole was involved in all eyes &28 eyes had multifocal retinitis. Majority of the patients received treatment with oral steroid, empirical or definitive antiviral therapy.Optic atrophy & maculopathy were the major causes of poor outcome. Conclusion:Retinitis following viral fever remains a challenge to the ophthalmologists.Rapid & effective treatment with oral steroid may have a beneficial role in management of these neurotropic viruses.
