Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the common causes of irreversible vision loss among the elderly. The purpose of this study was to assess vision targeted health related quality of life in patients with AMD.
This cross sectional analytical study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital. Complete ophthalmological examination was done. Visual function was assessed using The National Eye Institute 25-item Visual Function Questionnaire (VFQ25). The VFQ-25 consists of 25 vision targeted questions from which 11 vision-related subscales were calculated. A composite score was calculated from these subscales. Mann Whitney U test was applied.
A total of 58 AMD patients and 57 normal subjects were enrolled. Mean Composite Score of AMD patients was 57.47 and normal subject was 91.39. Patients with AMD showed significantly lower scores (p< 0.001) compared to normal subjects in all 11 subscales. Thus vision targeted health related quality of life is reduced in patients with AMD.
