AIM- To evaluate the clinical features of dry eye in Thyroid associated ophthalmopathy (TAO).
METHOD- 42 eyes of 22 patients with TAO, and 80 eyes of 40 patients without TAO were included in this prospective study. The Schirmer test 1, and Mucus fern test (MFT) were assessed. Results were then compared between the patients with TAO (group 1) and without TAO (group 2). Period of study was 1 year.
RESULT- The mean schirmer test 1 score was 13.4+/-7.32 mm and 23.9+/-4.57 mm in patients with TAO (group 1) and without TAO (group 2) respectively (p<0.05). Abnormal mucus fern pattern (type 3 and 4) was observed in 10 (44.6%) out of 22 patients of TAO (group 1) and 2 (5%) out of 40 patients without TAO (group 2) (p<0.05). The mean proptosis did not show any difference between with TAO (group 1) and without TAO (group 2) (p>0.05).
CONCLUSION- Dry eye is common in patients with Thyroid associated ophthalmopathy.
