Aim:
To compare the results of conjunctival graft closure in pterygium surgery using fibrin glue or vicryl sutures.
Methods:
Study was carried out in a RIO in eastern Odisha from January 2016 to August 2016.Prospective study on 80 pts with primary pterygium.Surgery with conjunctival auto grafting done using either 8‑0 vicryl sutures (40 eyes) or fibrin glue (40 eyes). Follow-up period was 6 mnths with evaluatuation for any complication, discomfort or recurrences.
Results:
39% women and 61% men. Duration of surgery was 20- 35 mins with glue and 30- 60 mins with suture. Post op pain, photophobia, FB sensation, watering and chemosis were present in both, but significantly less with glue. Recurrence rate lower with glue.Two cases of pyogenic granuloma in the fibrin glue grp reported. 1 patient with glue lost the graft.
Conclusion:
The use of fibrin glue in pterygium surgery significantly reduced operative time, postop discomfort and recurrence rate, but long term follow up needed.
