AIM-To describe morphological patterns of diabetic macular edema by OCT and correlate with visual acuity
DESIGN-Cross-sectional observational study
METHOD-pts >21 yrs age having DM with NPDR/PDR with CSME diagnosed with slit lamp biomicroscopy(78D) lens & macular thickening by OCT included. Pts with surgery within 3months excluded. Detail ant & post segment evaluation done.
RESULTS-69 eyes of 50 pts(M:F=28:22) showed DME by OCT. Out of the 4 types cystoid macular edema(CME)-39% was most common followed by diffuse retinal thickening(DRT) & serous RD(SRD)-26% each & least common was post hyaloid traction(PHT)-9%. Central subfield thickness(CST) showed linear relation with VA. Mean CST highest in SRD & least in DRT pattern. The best mean VA was observed in DRT & worst in SRD type.
CONCLUSION-OCT is a promising method for screening early development, diagnosis & follow-up of DME, thereby translates into more timely management & targeted prophylaxis for pts with high risk characteristics
