Objective of the study: To find the microbial flora in donor corneoscleral rims stored in intermediate media at the time of keratoplasty
To find associated risk factors
Methods:After utilization of the cornea stored in intermediate medium, the peripheral corneoscleral rims were plated on culture media in the operation theatre.Plates were incubated for 5 days and growth noted. Data of donors was collected from the eye bank. A statistical analysis was done
Results:141 rims were included. The culture positivity was 26.2%.It was more for fungi than for bacteria. An association was found with time to preservation(p:0.034).No association was seen with age, gender, place of retrieval, locality of donor, cause of death;death to enucleation time or duration of preservation
Conclusion:The study establishes levels and spectrum of microbes among donor tissues in South India. To contain the levels of contamination, we might consider modifying antimicrobials in storage media
Financial Disclosures:Nil
