Aim : To evaluate the social and medical(systemic & ocular) factors causing delay in surgery in bilateral hypermature cataract (HMSC).
Materials & methods : A retrospective analysis of all patients with b/l HMSC undergoing cataract surgery at our hospital was done.A complete history was noted. Visual acuity, IOP were recorded, pupil dilatation and PXF were noted if present.
Results : 18 patients with b/l HMSC who underwent surgery were included. 12/18 had ischemic heart disease (IHD), 14/18 had diabetes(DM) and 10/18had hypertension(HTN). The cause for delay in undergoing the surgery were IHD (due to non availability of cardiac monitoring) in 12, uncontrolled DM in 10 and HTN in 2. Only 2 patients informed financial factors were the cause for delay. Small pupil was noted in 11/18 and PXF in 10/18 patients.
Conclusion : IHD and uncontrolled DM were the major cause for delay in surgery in b/l HMSC. Financial factors played a minor role in the delay in surgery in our study.
