Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) is a form of leukemia characterized by the increased and unregulated growth of predominantly myeloid cells in the bone marrow and their accumulation in blood.
Symptoms indicative of leukemia would be upper quadrant pain, loss of appetite and Resultsing weight loss, mild fever and night sweats due to an elevated basal level of metabolism.
Ocular manifestation as the only presenting sign of CML is rare. Leukemic retinopathy can be mistaken for retinal vein occlusion, diabetes, anemia etc.
This Case is of a previously healthy male who presented for a routine eye check up with only visual difficulty and was subsequently referred to a hematologist because of unusual fundus findings and was diagnosed with CML. Prompt treatment was instituted,Resultsing in good recovery.
This Case report highlights the importance of recognizing early fundus changes, which should allow earlier diagnosis and treatment.
