Purpose: To evaluate ocular survival after penetrating injuries of globe by metallic foreign body.
Method: We describe three cases of penetrating ocular injuries with intraocular foreign body and traumatic cataract.Ocular Trauma Scoring (OTS) was done.No posterior segment involvement was noted. Primary repair with foreign body removal was undertaken within 12 hours.Cataract extraction with IOL implantation was done in primary sitting in one case due to ruptured lens capsule and other two cases underwent secondary lens management. Patients were evaluated subsequently over 6 months for postoperative sequelae. Ocular survival was assessed qualitatively on the basis of structure and function.
Results: All patients recovered with BCVA> 6/18. No evidence of phthisis bulbi was noted.
Conclusion: Non-inclusion of cataract at presentation in OTS leads to misleading probable visual outcome, especially after lens management in effectively managed open globe injuries with normal posterior segment.
