To enlighten various types, indications and newer uses of Viscoelastic substances. Now referred to as ophthalmic viscosurgical devices (OVDs), are routinely used in cataract surgery to pressurize the anterior chamber and protect delicate ocular structures. It can be classified as cohesive, dispersive and viscoadaptive. OVDs are mainly composed of sodium hyaluronate, chondroitin sulphate and hydroxypropyl methycellulose. Side effects including postop increase in IOP, crystallization of IOL surface, pseudo anterior uveitis etc. are mild and transient. Recent uses are viscoanaesthesia and viscostaining of capsule. Other uses include viscocanalostomy, in keratoplasty and posterior segment surgeries etc. With the recent addition of various Viscoelastic substances, many intraocular surgeries are now faster and safer with better visual recovery. Although there is no ideal OVD, it can be used properly depending on steps of the surgery, technique and skill of surgeon, for good visual outcomes.
