AIM:To study refractive outcome & myopic shift after primary IOL implantation in congenital cataract in infants.
METHODS:Retroprospective study conducted from 2014-2016.21 eyes(12 patients) with 1 year followup included.Outcome measures:postoperative predicted refraction, lens calculation error, rate of myopic shift.Statistical analysis was done.
RESULTS:Mean age:7.5(0.70)months.Target refraction(± 2D) achieved in 76.19% eyes & correlated with predicted refraction(p<0.01). Neither age, axial length, expected refraction(p value=0.25,0.92,0.37respectively)influenced lens calculation error.Mean myopic shift-4.26(2.29) was significant(p value=0.0002).Rapid myopic shift during last 6 months of follow up noted.2 patients(3 eyes) had longer follow up duration & poor compliance with spectacles showed larger & rapid myopic shift(6.25,6.5,7.375). Conclusion:Primary IOL implantation can be beneficial in infants with reasonable accurate predictive refraction however refractive surprises may occur.
