Materials: 80 Patients with IDA i.e. hemoglobin : < 10 g/dl, serum transferrin satration : < 15%, serum iron : < 50 mig/dl, serum ferritin : < 15 mic/dl and TIBC : > 300 mic/dl and age and sex match healthy individuals between 20 – 50 years of age were included in the study. All the cases and controls underwent detailed ophthalmic evaluation including Optical Coherence Tomography. Haemoglobin, serum iron , serum transferrin saturation, serum ferritin, TIBC and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness by optical coherence tomography was determined for both the groups and compared.
Results : The retinal nerve fiber layer thickness in temporal and inferior quadrant is much lesser in patients of iron deficiency anemia. There is positive correlation of RNFL thickness with hemoglobin, iron, ferritin, transferrin saturation and negative correlation with TIBC.
Conclusion : The retinal nerve fiber layer thickness in patients with iron deficiency anaemia is lesser than that in normal individuals.
