Traditionally the diagnosis of glaucoma has revolved around the intra ocular pressure, optic disc, visual fields and gonioscopy. One concern has been the late stage at which glaucoma is being diagnosed in our country. The other is the false positives we create in our busy clinics as we depend on technology to answer the question – Yes Glaucoma / No Glaucoma.
Since normal in medicine is rarely described as an absolute value, many without glaucoma are on treatment simply because a clinical co relate of instrument based findings has not been done. If intra ocular pressure is one variable then 11-21 mmHg is considered normal. Do we start treatment if the IOP is 22 or 23 mmHg. This course highlights through case discussions the importance of clinically co relating IOP readings, structural and functional assessment of the optic disc and angle outflow facility in the clinical perspective to avoid unnecessary treatment.
