PP3 : Role of Vitamin D in Symptomatic Evaporative Dry Eye Disease

OBJECTIVE:To investigate effect of vitamin D deficiency on tear break-up time (TBUT) and Schirmer-1 test scores in Evaporative Dry Eye Disease (EDED) patients.

METHODS:50 EDED patients and 46 healthy volunteers were included. Ocular discomfort was graded by OSDI questionnaire.Patients with OSDI score>13, Schirmer’s value>10 mm,TBUT<10 seconds were categorized as EDED.Healthy volunteers with Schirmer’s values>10 mm, TBUT>10 seconds without dry eye were controls.Total serum vitamin D was measured by chemiluminescent enzyme linked immunoassay.

RESULTS:Mean OSDI score was significantly higher in EDED patients.TBUT and Schirmer values were significantly lower in EDED patients than in controls.Mean vitamin D levels were significantly lower in EDED patients than controls.An inverse correlation was observed between vitamin D and OSDI scores(r = –0.456).

CONCLUSION:Vitamin D levels appear to be linked to symptoms of EDED.Hence, Vitamin D supplementation may be beneficial in management.
