Dr.Jolly Rohatgi
23 yrs F presented with severe pain and redness following insect crawling on her RE during sleep. Cornea showed multiple criss cross lines and large epithelial defects on fluorescein staining. On everting the eyelids on slit lamp examination multiple fine hair were seen embedded in palpebral, bulbar conjunctiva & fornices. These were removed in multiple follow-ups. Patient was started on topical steroids & lubricants following which pain and redness improved within 1 week. After 1 month symptoms recurred. On slit lamp examination one setae was found on lower lid margin. Patient improved after its removal and topical steroids. No nodular conjunctivitis or uveitis developed.
Insect hair in eye is especially common in people from a rural setup. Many cases are missed due to non availability of slit lamp examination and hence under- reported.
We report a rare case of insect hair which was successfully managed with meticulous removal of setae in multiple follow-ups.
