Aim-As current tonometers cannot reliably measure intraocular pressure (IOP) in eyes with scarred/prosthetic cornea, our aim was to evaluate alternative scleral IOP readings by Schiotz, ICare & ICare PRO & see how they predict Goldmann Applanation Tonometry (GAT) readings in eyes with normal cornea.
Methods-Prospective, cross sectional study conducted at tertiary centre.
Results-GAT IOP readings of 123 eyes of 69 subjects ranged from 10-62 mmHg. Mean age was 45.52 ±16.16 years. With multiple comparison of means by Dunnett Contrasts, mean difference in scleral IOP measurements by ICare and ICare PRO varied by 25 and 22 mmHg compared to GAT (p<0.001), however, mean difference with Schiotz compared to central GAT IOP was 1.58 mmHg, which was excellent (p=0.58). The results were also tested with a new data set, which also showed good predictability (p=0.24) Conclusion-Scleral IOP readings by Schiotz tonometer predicted the central corneal GAT IOP readings very well at all IOP ranges
