Aim: To analyze effectiveness of toric IOL in correcting various degrees of astigmatism.
Method: Prospective study of 60 eyes with corneal astigmatism >1D undergoing cataract surgery with toric IOL. The eyes were divided based on pre operative astigmatism in Diopters (D) into 3 Groups- Group 1(1D-2.5D), Group 2(2.51D-4D) and Group 3 (>4D). LogMAR UCVA, BSCVA, manifest refraction and IOL rotation were recorded pre operatively and at 1 week, 1 month and 3 month post operatively. Corneal astigmatism was recorded at 3 month post operatively.
Results: The best corrected visual acuity showed significant improvement post operatively in Group 1 and Group 2. The improvement was not significant in Group 3.
There was significant reduction in the residual Cylinder post operatively in Group 1 and 2. The reduction was not significant in Group 3.
Conclusions: The Toric IOL can be considered as an effective tool in correcting the astigmatism of 1D to 4D at the time of cataract surgery.
