Introduction- Schwannoma is a benign tumour of the peripheral nerve arising from schwann cells that arise from the neural sheath. However its location in eye lid is rare. Pub med search showed very few reports of eyelid schwannoma.
Case report- We report here a case of a 60 year old female who developed a large size approx (5.5x 4cm) right upper eye lid mass covering the palpebral aperture. It was firm, non tender, non pulsatile and causing mechanical ptosis. Skin over the mass was normal in colour and texture. It was surgically removed and lid repaired. The histopathological examination showed presence of schwannoma.
Conclusion- Accurate histological diagnosis and early complete excision of tumour should be the objective in managing Schwannoma of the eyelid. We recommend that Schwanomma be considered in the differential diagnosis of all well-circumscribed eyelid swellings. Lid salvage should be the goal of treatment, wherever possible, even in long standing disease.
