AIM:To study the factors that hamper visual outcome in traumatic optic neuritis
METHOD:A prospective study of 20 diagnosed cases of traumatic optic neuritis following RTA & admitted to a RIO between June’16-April’17.Detail history taken, VA, Pupillary reaction, IOP recorded. Funduscopy, CT& MRI done. IV methyl prednisolone 30mg/kg loading dose started, then 5mg/kg for next 48hr followed by oral steroid tapering doses(40mg-10mg)given.BCVA recorded after 48hr&1month
RESULT:20 pts(22 eyes) of traumatic optic neuritis after RTA studied(M:F-9:1)Age(27-43 yrs) 80% had poor vision(HM- PL/PR +VE),15 pt had periorbital edema,12 SCH,8 pt had RAPD+, 4 pts had orbital #.11 pts improved to 6/18 after48hrs. At the end of 1 month out of 8 having RAPD,3pts improved to 6/60 and rest 5 not improved(had optic n damage).Pt not having RAPD & having only periorbital edema,or SCH improved to 6/18
CONCLUSION: The visual outcome in pts treated with IV &oral steroids is better in absence of orbital# or RAPD+
