AIM: To compare the efficiency of visual acuity measurements using Lea symbols chart (LSC) and Sheridan Gardiner chart (SGC) in pre-school children vision screening.METHODS:In this cross sectional comparative study, 260 preschool children, 3-5 years, were enrolled through cluster sampling and screened using LSC and SGC. Visual acuity scores (VAS) and time taken for testing were compared (t-test and validity tests). RESULTS: Out of the 251 children with reliable measurements, 53.4% were 4 years, 39.4% were 5 years and 7.2% were 3 years old. 49.8% were boys and 51.2% were girls. Mean VAS for LSC was 0.188±0.16 and SGC was 0.034±0.14, (p<0.001). Mean time for measurement using LSC was higher (139.34±0.6s) than SGC (109.50±0.2s) (p<0.01). Sensitivity of LSC was 94.7%, SGC was 52.6%.Specificity of LSC was 80.0% and SGC was 83.33%. Negative predictive value of LSC was 80% and that of SGC was 64.28%. CONCLUSION:Lea symbols chart was more efficient in pre-school vision screening in our study.
