Aim:To assess the awareness of glaucoma
Methods: A questionnaire-based cross-sectional survey carried out in hospital staff
Results: Average age was 28.4 years. 29 (41%) male, 38 (59%) female. 16 (22.5%) participants were non-clinical and 55 (77.5%) were clinical. 67 (94.3%) people had heard of glaucoma. 4 people (5.7%) who had never heard of glaucoma were all non-clinical. Two main sources of knowledge for glaucoma were ‘during education’(50.7%), and ‘from ophthalmologist’(43.3%).Most common answers for ‘what happens in glaucoma’ were ‘progressive & irreversible visual field loss’ (60.6%)&‘pressure inside the eyes may or may not be high’ (54.9%). 4 subjects thought that glaucoma is non-progressive. >3/4th believed that glaucoma is a threat to vision. Only 14.1% people prioritized blindness over other diseases for treatment. 2 subjects felt that glaucoma can be treated by Yoga/Ayurveda
Conclusion: Glaucoma awareness is relatively high, but there is a lot of scope for improvement
