Introduction:. The study tries to evaluate patterns of presentation and visual impairment status for trabeculectomy.
Methods: Retrospective chart series. Subjects with primary trabeculectomy for primary open or angle closure glaucoma from March 2015 to March 2017 were included.
Results: Of the 74 patients, mean age was 62.5±8.7 years (45-80 years) including 43 (58%) males and 31(42%) females. The presenting IOP in operated eye was 28.85±12.70 mm Hg; logMAR visual acuity was 1.14±1.0. Mean deviation in visual fields (n=40) was -22.09±7.49dB. According to WHO criteria, 43 (58.1%) had none/mild visual impairment; 17 (23%) had moderate impairment; 3 (4.1%) had severe impairment and 11 (14.8%) were blind. A higher rate of visual impairment seen in females (52%).
Conclusion: A high proportion of patients presenting to our unit are visually impaired by the time they present for surgery. Further awareness, training of clinical staff and investigation of gender bias are necessary.
