Aim:To study the bony orbits of Indians, as there is no available data in literature. Study design:70 orbits of 35 Indian skulls were studied using depth gauge, sliding calipers, dividers and metal scale. Skull measurements, width, height, depth, lengths of all the 4 walls of the orbit, the dimensions of optic canal, its distance from the medial and floor margins, important orbital foramina, and dimensions of lacrimal fossa were measured. Results: The inter orbital distance was 21.7mm .The average width was 40.03 and 39.93, Height 33.63 and 33, 56 and depth 45.15&44.30(all measurements in mm) respectively for right and left orbits .There is a great variation in the number and position of apertures of anterior and posterior ethmoid vessels. This study, the first in Indian literature provides normal values for Indian orbits and throws light on the differences from orbits of other races. Most of the orbits are microseme. Roof is the longest orbital wall and medial wall is the shortest.
