Purpose:
To assess visual and clinical outcome after phakic implantable contact lenses (ICL) implantation in high myopia (-6D) and identify preoperative ocular parameters that predict postoperative vault.
Method:
This was a prospective, interventional study on 50 patients with high myopia undergoing ICL implantation from November 2012 to October 2014 at a tertiary eye hospital.
Results:
The mean age of the study population was 26 ± 4.9 years. Mean spherical equivalent improved from -12.72 ± 4.17D preoperatively to -0.22 ± 0.35D at one year with best corrected visual acuity of 1.0 (Snellen decimal acuity) in 38 eyes (76%). Mean vault was found to be 526.2 ± 165 µm with statistically significant correlation between vault and preoperative anterior chamber depth and white-to-white distance. Intraocular pressure remained stable in all patients.
Conclusion:
ICL implantation is a safe and effective surgical procedure and provides a stable refractive outcome in patients with high myopia.
