Purpose:To study changing trends in Duane retraction syndrome (DRS) management
Methods:Retrospective study of DRS patients presenting in 2015(Group 1) and 2005(Group 2).Management and surgical outcomes were compared
Results:In Group 1 (n=90), 64% left eye was involved. 50% were males. Commonest type (76% patients) was Type 1 DRS . Of 15 patients who underwent surgery, 10 were bimedial recession, Superior rectus transposition (SRT) in 2 and lateral rectus Y-split with recession in 2. Abnormal head posture (AHP) resolved in 95% and globe retraction and leash corrected in 90%. Both SRT patients had improved abduction.
In Group 2 (n=80) 76% left eye was involved, 34% were males, 75.6% had Type 1 DRS, all 7 surgical patients had bimedial recession. AHP resolved in 75%. Strabismus correction was equal in both groups.
Conclusion:Newer advances in surgical management of DRS have better outcomes for correction of AHP, associated features and strabismus
