Introduction: Though rare, bear attacks are not uncommon among those living around the bear habitats. Face is involved commonly with ocular injuries being most dreaded complication.
Aim: To study the pattern, management and complications of bear bite ocular injuries.
Material and Method: An observational prospective study conducted during June 2016 to May 2017. About 41 patients were included, male (39) outnumbering female (2).
Result: In 7 patients, one eye was enucleated. 23 patients had eyelid lacerations, 17 had eyelid oedema with ecchymosis and fracture of orbital wall observed in 4 patients. All patients had abrasions, subconjunctival haemorrhage and chemosis. 16 patients had facial disfigurement. Visual acuity was 6/24 to 6/60 in 22 and 6/6 to 6/18 in 13 patients at discharge respectively.
Conclusion: Multidisciplinary approach is needed to manage bear bite patients. Minimizing the time from injury to hospital is very crucial for survival of patient.
