Aim: Bilateral irreversible acute visual loss is rare. This requires rapid recognition & therapy,as it can lead to a devastating impact physically and socio-economically. This report describes a spectrum of cases of bilateral irreversible acute visual loss.
Method: Retrospective case review of 8 patients
Result: Included 4males & 4females with age range of 20-59years. Causes of visual loss included bilateral invasive orbital fungal infection(2), bilateral CRAO due to Takayasu’s arteritis(1), due to fat embolism(1), bilateral panophthalmitis in a dengue patient, bilateral occipital lobe infarct(1), bilateral lateral geniculate body infarct(1) and acute corneal melt due to SLE(1).The final visual acuity in 12eyes of 8patients was no PL & in 4eyes of 2patients HMCF.
Conclusion: Severe systemic diseases which were neglected or inadequately treated were the cause for bilateral irreversible acute visual loss. High index of suspicion and early treatment may help in salvaging some vision.
