A 16 year old male diagnosed with juvenile hypertension was referred for Ophthalmological evaluation.
On examination,his best corrected visual acuity was 6/6 in both eyes. Anterior segment examination was unremarkable. Fundus examination revealed normal optic disc with generalised narrowing of arterioles with broadening of light reflex. Tortuosity of the arteries in the form of cork screwing( U shaped arterioles) was present. Venous calibre was normal and there was no tortuosity.Based on these fundus findings of cork screwing of arterioles,patient was referred for cardiological evaluation to rule out coarctation of aorta.Echocardiogram revealed post ductal coarctation of aorta.
An account of the characteristic retinal changes which consisted of corkscrew shaped tortuosity of the retinal arterioles in a case of coarctation of aorta is made .This case highlights the importance of ophthalmoscopic examination in diagnosing fatal systemic diseases.
