Purpose: To evaluate the central macular thickness and determine its association with axial length.
Methods: 102 eyes of 102 patients from South India aged between 10-40 years were divided into three groups – low, moderate and high myopia. All the patients underwent a complete ophthalmological examination of the anterior and posterior segment that included assessment of of macular thickness using Spectral Domain OCT. Association between the central sub-field macular thickness, refractive error and axial length was analysed.
Results: The mean central sub-field macular thickness of the three groups was 233.84 ± 20.82µ, 241.42 ± 20.43µ and 239.71 ± 25.66µ. The axial length ranged from 22mm to 29mm with a mean of 24.84 ± 1.22 mm and was found to be more in higher myopes.
Conclusion:
The central thickness of macula did not seem to vary significantly with grade of myopia or the axial length of these patients. However, axial length showed a positive correlation with the refractive error.
