Purpose: To analyse the indications, types and time interval of repeat keratoplasty procedures (KPs) at a tertiary center in Eastern India.
Methods: Retrospective large case series of patients who underwent repeat KPs between Jan 2012 and Dec 2016.
Results: 1014(17.8%) of 5695 KPs were re-grafts in 5 years. 824(81.3%) were first time re-graft. Main indications were delayed graft failure 645(63.6%) and infection in 349(34.4%) eyes. Initial KPs were: therapeutic penetrating keratoplasty (TPK) 54.3%, optical PK (OPK) 26.8%, endothelial keratoplasty (EK) 14.8% and keratoprosthesis (Kpro) 2.5%. Median interval between surgeries was 8 months (range 1-468). Type of re-grafting done: OPK 37.4%, TPK 37.3%, EK 21.4% and KPro in 3.8% eyes. Of total KPs, re-grafts accounted for 379(27.8%) of 1363 OPK and 378(14.5%) of 2612 TPK procedures.
Conclusion: Repeat KP is high in this series due to large number of TPK re-grafted for visual rehabilitation and high infection rate in this part of the world.
