Patients of cataracts are always anxious to know visual outcome following phaco surgery. And surgeons are equally anxious to know particularly when such patients have retinal pathology. Retinal visual acuity can also be measured by PAM or laser inferometry. If predicted visual acuity (PVA) is more than pre operative BCVA, then patients and surgeons are more confident and more so in cases with known macular pathology. We have included 87 patients of cataract in this study. 62 pts has no other ocular pathology while 25 pts had macular pathology also. Pre op BCVA and PVA by Retinal Acuity Meter (RAM) were recorded. All pts had no intra or post op. complications. BCVA was again recorded at one month and was compared with PVA. It was observed that PVA and post BCVA were matching in 57 (65.52%) cases. Post BCVA improved by 2 to 5 lines in 21 (24.14%) cases and was less in 9 (10.34%) cases. RAM is quite predictable and can be part of pre op. evaluation in all cataract patients.
