MATERIAL AND METHODS: Prospective, descriptive. Study population: Consecutive patients of retinal detachment undergoing belt buckling for either Vitreoretinal surgery or conventional scleral buckling. The knot was assessed for durability by noting the number of breakages or slippage. The failure rate of tightening the buckle after knot placement was noted.
RESULTS: The clove hitch knot had no breakages or slippages. A minimal rate of buckle slippage during tightening of band encirclage was noted.
CONCLUSION: Clove hitch knot is a well-described technique, which is rarely employed by surgeons today. It has similar performance compared to a buckle sleeve and proves to be cost effective.
