Dr.Anjana Devi Rudra Warrier
A 45 days old female baby presented with loose stools with blood tinge. Blood sample taken to do investigations showed that the blood has milky appearance. Lipid profile showed Total Cholesterol 594 mg/ dl, Triglycerides 30,784 mg/dl. She was diagnosed to have Familial Chylomicronemia syndrome. She was referred for fundus examination which showed Grade II Lipemia Retinalis. She was started on skimmed milk formula feeds and Omega 3 fatty acids. Triglycerides reduced to 761 mg/dl. Blood sample colour became normal and the blood vessels in the fundus cleared and became normal in appearance.
Conclusion
Lipemia retinalis is an important and reliable parameter of high levels of chylomicrons and triglycerides and should be considered as a significant clue while diagnosing.
